We invite you and your organization to join other Winnipeggers in calling on the federal government to provide the required funds to build a road that will connect Shoal Lake 40 with the rest of the world. In 1915, Shoal Lake First Nation was cut off from the main land in order to build the aqueduct that brings fresh water all the way to Winnipeg. If this was not bad enough, for the past 17 years Shoal Lake 40 has been under a boil water advisory. While we enjoy fresh water 270 indigenous people are suffering from very limited access to the main land, deplorable living conditions and limited opportunity for economic development. Shoal Lake 40 has been asking for a road to be constructed for over 30 years now. We must Idle No More. If the Truth and Reconciliation process means anything, it means that Canadians must recognize what has happened to the indigenous people of this land and find ways to make amends. 10 Days for Shoal Lake offers us one opportunity. Help us pave a road to reconciliation.
Our hope is to involve individuals and groups throughout the city - all social, cultural and religious groups, places of employment, businesses, and places where people gather. Our actions will be a sign of solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Shoal Lake.
Starting on July 10th and continuing through the 19th, we invite you to choose one or more of the following actions. You can add it to our Facebook event page and spread the word by sending it to firstname.lastname@example.org.
1. PAVE A ROAD
Create a road-like letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper demanding justice for Shoal Lake 40. The letter can be printed in large letters at one end of mural paper and then rolled out like a road where hundreds of supporters can use markers to sign their names and leave messages for the government.
